The Wallace Suite

This is a split-level room and has two sofa beds on the lower level, with access to the ensuite bathroom. The upper level is accessed via the spectacular cast-iron spiral stairs, leading to the mezzanine, with a super-king size bed or twin beds, dressing table, and armchair, with beautiful views over the front lawn through the four gothic stained glass windows.

This room was originally the Dining Hall. The room is known as the Wallace Suite to honour the fact that Margaret, William Wallace’s Mother, was a Craufurd, a cousin of Craufurdland, and the Craufurds of Craufurdland were always by his side. James Craufurd of Craufurdland was a follower of his cousin Sir William Wallace. James’s Aunt on his father’s side, Margaret, married Sir Malcolm Wallace of Ellerslie in Ayrshire 1 mile west of Kilmarnock (not to be confused with Elderslie in Renfrewshire) and became the mother of Sir William Wallace, the immortal hero of Scotland. With the power and influence of the High Office of the Sheriff of Ayr within their family, Margaret Craufurd’s father and brothers, risking life and property, provided protection for William Wallace after his initial fateful clash with the English. During this time Wallace’s Craufurd uncles were influential in training him in the arts of diplomacy, war, and languages as well as nurturing Wallace’s tremendous desire to re-establish an independent Scotland.
